September sunshine in Spain

September sunshine in Spain: second home owners hit the fairways

Spain welcomed a record-breaking 10.1 million visitors in July 2023, according to the country’s National Statistics Institute (INE). Visitor numbers were up 11.4% compared with July 2022, while tourist spending was up by 16.4%. The figures mean that 47.6 million foreign tourists have now visited Spain so far in 2023, with combined spending of nearly €60 billion.

Now, as September rolls around, the end of the school summer holidays doesn’t mean the end of tourism in Spain for the year – but it does mean that visitors can enjoy the country minus the summer crowds. According to leading Spanish home builder Taylor Wimpey España, this year-round access to Spain is one of the key benefits of owning a second home there.

Spain is a wonderful country to enjoy throughout the year. September is particularly popular with golfers looking to enjoy the country’s world-class fairways with more space and serenity than over the summer months. Spain’s beaches are also lovely in September, with fewer visitors than during July and August but with the sea still delightfully warm. As such, many second home owners particular enjoy spending time in the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Mallorca at this time of year.”

Spain’s year-round appeal means that visitors can enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle there regardless of the season. Homeowners at Taylor Wimpey España’s Sunny Golf and Emerald Greens, for example, can reap the benefits of spending time on the golf course during September, when the weather is a little cooler and the crowds a little thinner.

At Sunny Golf, homes with panoramic views of the course at Estepona Golf are easily accessible from both Malaga and Gibraltar airports, the bright and airy properties face southwest to make the most of the sunshine on their large terraces. The private residential complex provides a communal pool and gardens for owners’ use year-round.

Emerald Greens also delivers golf-front homes, at the popular San Roque Club in Cadiz. The apartments surround three communal pools, with a mix of two- and three-bedroom homes providing views of the golf course and coast.

A wide range of water-based activities are available for those seeking an active break in Spain during September. Surfing, sailing and diving are all popular, while the average sea temperature of 25°C in Mallorca will ensure swimmers are happy too.

Finding a suitable property close to the sea can be something of a challenge in Mallorca, but Senses Cala Anguila fits the bill. There, the two-bedroom apartments with communal gardens and pool – and private gardens on the ground floor – sit just 200 metres from the beach, with open plan living space that flows beautifully from indoors to out. Homes are located on Mallorca’s peaceful eastern coast close to Porto Cristo, Porto Colom and the stunning coves at Cala Mandía and Cala Romántica.

For many regular visitors to Spain, spending time there in September provides a chance to catch up with friends in the local community. Many areas have diverse communities with a mix of native Spaniards, British second home owners and property owners from around the world. The international diversity is such that Taylor Wimpey España has already sold homes in Spain to buyers of 44 different nationalities so far in 2023 (year-to-date August).

The Costa Blanca is one area with a thriving expat community, with regular visitors connecting over their shared love of the area’s golf courses, beaches, cuisine and more. Homes there offer excellent value for money compared with many Spanish coastal regions (and the UK); prices for townhouses at Breeze in Balcón de Finestrat near Benidorm and the Puig Campana golf course, for example, start from €367,000 plus VAT. The spacious, three-bedroom houses with generous terraces and private gardens are ideal for family visits or for sharing holidays with friends. The townhouses face southeast, with accommodation spread over four floors, including a lovely roof terrace. Owners enjoy use of Breeze’s communal pool and gardens.

For year-round enjoyment, the Costa Blanca also provides hiking and cycling routes through the picturesque Serra Gelada natural park and an impressive 21 golf courses dotted across the region.

“The Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and Mallorca all provide an enticing range of year-round activities, meaning that homeowners in these areas have a wealth of choice when it comes to how to spend their time. In September, the clement weather also means that visitors can simply relax on the terrace with their thoughts or dive into a good book while they enjoy the sunshine – relaxation in Spain takes many forms!”
