There’s nothing like the impending arrival of spring to get buyers excited about buying a second home overseas. And this year, according to leading Spanish home builder Taylor Wimpey España, buyers are thinking creatively about how they can use their new pad in the sun.
“Being able to work remotely has opened up the idea of buying a second home to new demographics, with families now looking to spend longer breaks in the sunshine by blending work and leisure. Properties in areas such as the Costa del Sol are certainly benefitting from this.”

At this time of year, key-ready homes hold particular appeal, with buyers keen to debunk from the UK to warmer climes. Spain and Portugal both attract plenty of interest thanks to their proximity to the UK, abundant sunshine, affordability and outdoor lifestyle. Towards the end of 2021, Portugal’s Algarve gained the added cachet of having been crowned ‘Europe’s leading beach destination’ by the World Travel Awards, for the third year in a row. Turismo de Portugal was also voted ‘Europe’s Leading Tourist Board 2021’ – another positive indication that visitors are going to enjoy their time in the Iberian country.
“Portugal is the perfect antidote as another cold, grey winter in the UK draws to a close. The Algarve has an average of seven hours of glorious sunshine per day in March and nine in April, creating plenty of opportunities for spending time on the fairways, taking long walks along the beach and enjoying lunch al fresco. We have a lot of buyers enquiring about everything from beachfront apartments to golf villas at present, with this lifestyle very much in mind.”
