British buyers in Spain spend over €500,000 on Costa del Sol property

Taylor Wimpey España says British buyers now spend over €500,000 on average for Costa del Sol homes, before VAT and other buying costs.

British buyers purchasing through Taylor Wimpey España are now spending more than €500,000 on average for a home in Spain, before VAT and other purchase costs. The developer says this is the first time its average selling price to British purchasers has crossed that threshold.

The company has sold homes to more than 30 nationalities across Spain this year, but says the Costa del Sol remains the main focus for British buyers. Beach and golf homes are both drawing attention, with Dutch buyers competing with Britons to be Taylor Wimpey España’s leading buyer nationality in the area.

The comments come from the Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey España, who has sold property in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands for the past 20 years.

Buying costs add around 13–14%
The headline price does not include VAT or other buying costs. According to Pritchard, British buyers are typically spending around 13–14% on top of the €500,000 average sales price.

“Britons favour homes in the Costa del Sol, where they’re vying with Dutch buyers to be our top buyer nationality.”

For overseas buyers weighing up a new-build purchase, that extra amount is a key part of the overall budget rather than a minor add-on.

Why buyers are spending more on new homes in Spain

Pritchard attributes the higher-value purchases to British demand for premium homes in prime coastal and golf locations. He also points to rising construction costs in Spain and across Europe, alongside continued demand for newly built homes.

“British buyers are seeking premium homes in prime coastal and golf locations and are prepared to pay more for the perfect spot.”

Taylor Wimpey España says many buyers prioritise the sustainability features of new-build homes compared with older resale properties. In the company’s view, buyers are increasing their budgets to secure their preferred Spanish home.
