Botanic – la Reserva de Alcuzcuz – Gardens
The intention with this garden proposal is to create a botanical journey through the five continents that have vegetation (the sixth continent, Antarctica, does not have any).
We have started with Europe, endowing it with a larger extension to the rest, with the intention of integrating it with the adjoining Mediterranean landscape. Hence, the use of pine trees (Pinus pinea and Pinus pinaster), cork oaks (Quercus suber) and gall oaks (Quercus faginea), in addition to the typical Mediterranean bushes and other species found here.
In Africa, the idea is to create a very fast journey from north to south, where we find from the very well-known palm trees that are commonplace in many gardens on the Costa del Sol, like the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) or the drago palm (Dracaena draco) to other less frequent ones, more typical of subtropical jungles, until we reach a Mediterranean-like vegetation, with plants of South African origin, including calodendrum (Calodendron capense), coral tree (Erythrina kaffra) or the Ficus lyrata.
The space dedicated to Asia seeks the notoriety of arboreal specimens with spectacular flowering, like the Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum), the purple orchid tree (Bauhinia purpurea) or chinaberry tree (Melia azedarach) together with more exotic representatives, such as the ginkgo tree (Gingko biloba) or the Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara), which acclimatise well to our micro-climate. Also, some bushes equally as blooming, like the Chinese hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa–sinensis).
It is on the Australian continent where we find most similitude with the Mediterranean climate we have here. Species known to all the amateur gardeners, like the cultivar (Callistemon spp), mimosas (Acacia spp.), lilawarra flame tree (Brachychyton acerifolia) or small red flower eucaliptus trees (Eucalyptus ficifolia) shall be used combined with notably blooming bushy species such as paperbarks.
The American continent presents a truly spectacular habitat diversity where we find from desert landscapes with an immense variety of cacti to one of the largest jungles of the planet, such as the Amazonas. This diversity is the reason for wanting to create a representation of cacti and succulent plants (Agave, Aloe, true cacti, etc.), plants that are widely used in our area for their spectacular blooming, such as the jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosaefolia), the silk floss tree (Ceiba speciosa) or tipa (Tipuana tipu), among many others; and even some spectacular connifers, as is the case of the sequoias (Sequoiadendrum giganteum).
