Moving to Spain After Brexit: What You Need to Know

UK nationals can visit Spain and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. However, from 2024 onwards, travellers must complete the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) form, which costs €7, before entering.

To live in Spain permanently, you’ll need to apply for a Spanish visa. The type of visa depends on your reason for moving—whether for work, study, or retirement. It’s advisable to begin the application process at least three months before your planned move. Visa fees vary depending on the type and current exchange rates. All visas must be renewed every two years until permanent residency is granted.

Biometric Residence Card (TIE)

Once in Spain, you’ll need to visit the local immigration office to obtain your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero). This card confirms your legal residency and allows you to live and study in Spain.

Foreigner Identification Number (NIE)

The NIE is essential for working, studying, paying taxes, and accessing basic services in Spain. It’s one of the first administrative steps you’ll need to complete upon arrival.
