Costa del Sol luxury market attracts buyers from 28 different nations

The Costa del Sol has firmly established itself in recent years as one of the most sought-after and prestigious destinations in southern Europe. Its unique blend of an exceptional climate, high quality of life, modern infrastructure, and a premium residential offering has transformed the Malaga coastline into a magnet for discerning international buyers.

According to property developer Taylor Wimpey, international demand for the Costa del Sol has remained robust in the first half of the year, with buyers representing 28 different nationalities—a reflection of the growing diversity and interest among high-net-worth individuals seeking a home in southern Spain.

Data from the company reveals that Dutch buyers currently lead activity on the Costa del Sol, followed closely by Swedish and British clients. They are followed by German purchasers and, notably, strong domestic interest.

Taylor Wimpey has identified the preferred property type among these buyers: spacious homes with over 100 square metres of living space, terraces exceeding 30 square metres, sea views, and two or three bedrooms, complemented by premium amenities such as a swimming pool, private gym, co-working facilities, and 24-hour security.

The average price for properties of this calibre now stands at €700,000 in prime locations including Marbella, Estepona, Mijas, and Fuengirola.

Regarding buyer profiles, Taylor Wimpey España notes that the majority fall within the 45 to 59 age bracket, representing 54% of buyers, followed by those aged 30 to 44 (23%). Most clients possess a high level of financial solvency, with over 90% completing purchases without mortgage financing, allowing transactions to proceed swiftly and seamlessly.

Much more than a holiday destination

Far from being solely a seasonal retreat, the Costa del Sol is undergoing a genuine transformation, positioning itself as one of the most dynamic real estate markets in Europe. Its diversity, adaptability to evolving lifestyle trends, and global outlook have made it a benchmark for prosperity and development within the Mediterranean.

As Ignacio Oslé, Regional Director for Taylor Wimpey on the Costa del Sol, states, the region is no longer just about “investment or tourism, but long-term life projects.”

Many clients are now seeking permanent residence, driven by a lifestyle change that blends nature, wellbeing, and connectivity. “Some choose to relocate to work remotely by the sea, others wish to enjoy the climate year-round, and many embrace a more active, balanced lifestyle in southern Europe,” Oslé explains.

In 2024 alone, the Costa del Sol welcomed over 14 million visitors, generating more than €21 billion in economic impact, according to the developer. Yet, the trend is clear: the Costa del Sol is evolving beyond its identity as a holiday destination to become a year-round lifestyle choice.

With a thriving international community and services designed for contemporary living—including the growing digital nomad segment—the Malaga coastline has established itself as one of Europe’s most desirable residential enclaves.
