WTA to launch new grass court event in Mallorca

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced the creation of a new tournament in Mallorca from 2016.

The new event, which will feature 32 players, will take place on grass courts in mid-June as a warm-up for the Wimbledon Championships.

The inaugural event is scheduled for 13th to 19th June 2016, the same week as the Birmingham grass court tournament.

Emotion Management gmbh, the German company that promotes the Mercedes Cup men’s tennis event in Stuttgart, will manage the new Mallorcan tournament. Mallorca Green Golf Promotions will manage the new venue that is being built for it.

Five permanent grass courts and a tennis academy are planned for the new venue, with input from the All England Lawn Tennis Club in the construction and maintenance plans.

From 2015, the period between the second and third Grand Slam events at Roland Garros and Wimbledon is being extended to three weeks to allow players more preparation time for the grass-court season. The new Mallorcan tournament will slot into the second of those three weeks
