Authentic charm and A-rated, sustainable second homes

Holidaymakers head to the Costa del Sol for natural beauty, authentic charm and A-rated, sustainable second homes

The thriving Costa del Sol is delighting holidaymakers with its incredible natural beauty, picturesque towns and villages and exceptional quality of life – so much so, that many are choosing not just to visit the region, but to buy a second home there.

Ignacio Osle, Regional Director of the Costa del Sol for leading Spanish home builder Taylor Wimpey España, explains: “The Costa del Sol isn’t just a destination – it’s a way of life. The unbeatable Mediterranean climate, with 300 sunshine-filled days each year and warm sea temperatures, is perfect for an active outdoor lifestyle year-round. With its stunning scenery, authentic regional charm and exceptional gastronomy, it’s no surprise so many people choose to visit… and stay.”

2024 saw 14 million people visit the Costa del Sol, reaffirming the region’s position as one of the most popular Mediterranean destinations in Europe. According to figures from Turismo Costa del Sol, the UK led the growth in international tourism in 2024, followed by visitors from Germany and France, with total tourism in the region growing by 17%. Average spending per visitor also rose, by 8%. Figures from Taylor Wimpey España show that Britons were also among the top nationalities of property buyers of the firm’s homes in the Costa del Sol in 2024, with Dutch, British, German and Polish buyers accounting for 50% of total reservations in the area.

Mountainous villages such as Benahavís, nestled between Marbella, Estepona and Ronda, showcase why the Costa del Sol is so enduringly popular. While the coast is just 9km away, the village delivers serenity and incredible natural landscapes in abundance. Considered by many to be the heart of the Costa del Sol’s gastronomy, Benahavís is home to outstanding restaurants that celebrate traditional Spanish flavours. It also provides an excellent selection of art galleries and craft shops, with many local creatives drawing inspiration for the dramatic scenery all around.

Local life offers plenty of opportunity for enjoying the great outdoors. Fitness takes many forms in and around Benahavís, from hikes in the mountains to diving into the clear waters of the natural plunge pools along the Guadalmina riverbed. Golfers are well catered for too, with Los Arqueros Golf and Capanes del Golf among several clubs within a few minutes’ drive.

Those keen to spend more than just a few days enjoying Benahavís also have all they need nearby. The Guadalmina Alta shopping centre provides for everyday needs, while the Atalaya International School welcomes learners from preschool through to 18, educating them in both Spanish and English.

Taylor Wimpey España’s beautiful new homes at Altura 160 are part of a €30M development that sits 160m above sea level in the Benahavís area, offering breathtaking views and modern Mediterranean living. Rated A for their energy efficiency, the apartments and penthouses are spread across five buildings, with just 12 homes in each, creating a lovely, boutique community feel. The buildings are part of the renowned “La Hacienda del Señorío de Cifuentes” urbanization, which provides residents with access to four swimming pools, extensive gardens, fountains, a bar, a coworking area and a gym, along with an exclusive concierge service.
