Demand is rising for A-rated homes in Spain

Demand is rising for A-rated homes in Spain, cutting energy use by up to 90% and lowering annual bills by 20–40%.

Sustainable homes in Spain are climbing rapidly up buyers’ priority lists, with energy efficiency now a central part of the property conversation. According to Taylor Wimpey España, more and more homebuyers are asking about the energy rating of new homes before making a decision.

“Sustainability is now a prominent part of our pre-purchase conversations with many buyers,” explains Marc Pritchard, who has been selling homes for leading Spanish home builder Taylor Wimpey España for over 30 years.

Buyers are increasingly focused on insulation, energy efficiency, and heating and cooling costs. They are looking to reduce CO₂ emissions while also protecting themselves against rising energy prices.

Taylor Wimpey España reports strong demand for A-rated homes, reflecting a clear shift in buyer priorities. Emissions and energy costs sit at the forefront of discussions, with sustainability now viewed as both an environmental and financial consideration.

Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey España, notes that this focus spans generations. Buyers of all ages are keen to prioritise homes that are kinder to the planet and to their monthly energy budgets, describing it as a “double win”.

What defines an A-rated home?

Taylor Wimpey España’s A-rated homes combine several energy-efficient features designed to reduce consumption while maintaining comfort throughout the year.

These properties include:

  • Excellent thermal insulation
  • High-performance windows and doors
  • Low-consumption appliances
  • Efficient heating and cooling systems
  • Solar panels to increase self-sufficiency
  • Aerothermal systems to reduce energy requirements while maintaining a comfortable temperature year-round
  • Acoustic insulation to reduce outside noise and enhance the living experience

Together, these features contribute to significantly improved energy performance.

Energy savings and lower CO₂ emissions

A home with an energy rating of A can consume up to 90% less energy than homes with low energy efficiency ratings such as E, F or G. This reduction in consumption translates into a substantial decrease in CO₂ emissions.

Newly built A-rated homes can also reduce annual energy expenditure by between 20% and 40%. The exact savings depend on factors including the size of the property, occupants’ usage habits and the location of the home.
