Spain crowned Europe’s top retirement destination

Spain has emerged as the top country in Europe, and third globally, in the newly published 2026 Global Retirement Report and Index from Global Citizen Solutions. The “single largest European destination for retired UK migrants,” Spain achieved a score of 99.6 out of 100 based on five pillars: quality of life, mobility and citizenship, tax optimization, quality of procedure (encompassing process speed and the inclusion of dependents) and cost and investment.

Leading Spanish home builder Taylor Wimpey España has worked with many individuals and families planning their retirement in Spain and has shed light into what those from the UK are seeking in terms of property type and location. For Britons buying homes in Spain, the Costa del Sol is the top region of choice, with Taylor Wimpey España recording an 18% YTD increase in sales there during September 2026.

Many of those buyers are purchasing homes with retirement plans in mind. The largest group of British buyers with Taylor Wimpey España by age are those between 45- and 59-years-old.

“Many of our buyers are looking ten or twenty years ahead to their retirement and choosing properties that will serve them in their golden years as well as providing a place to create many happy memories with family and friends before then. Typically, British buyers prefer apartments as their property type, as they enable them to be at the heart of the action, whether on a golf resort or somewhere that balances beach access with amenities being within strolling distance.”

Choosing a newly built apartment means buyers avoid the increased maintenance burden that can come with older properties. It also means enjoying a more energy efficient home, with A- and B-rated properties delivering reduced environmental impact and lower utility bills than less efficient homes. There’s also an emotional element to the choice to buy new, according to Taylor Wimpey España’s Marc Pritchard:

“There’s a sense of excitement about a forthcoming new life chapter, such as planning for retirement, that ties in with wanting a brand-new home. It prompts many buyers to seek a key-ready property too – somewhere fresh and new that they can begin using right away as they embrace the next phase in their lives.”

Buying a key-ready property direct from the developer in Spain can come with added benefits. At Sunny Golf in Estepona, Malaga, for example, buyers of the final two-bedroom apartment for sale at the development can currently take advantage of a special €15,000 furniture bonus. The home is priced from €370,000 plus VAT, offering golf views and southwest-facing terraces overlooking the picturesque course at Estepona Golf.

Key-ready homes are also available at Eden Beach, where the development’s final penthouses are priced from €540,000 plus VAT. Rated A for their energy efficiency, the homes are just 700 metres from the beautiful La Mata beach in Torrevieja (Alicante), offering spacious terraces with sea views in a prime coastal location.
