Clouds may have been looming over Spain’s economy but according to Blue Flag, the outlook for its beaches is bright. Spain beat stiff competition from beach heavyweights Greece and Italy after it scooped a record breaking 638 “blue flags”.
“The blue flag is a safe guard for tourists, as it shows that we worry about accessibility, the quality of the water and the sand, security, the cleanliness and the comfort of our beaches and marinas,” said Tourism spokesperson , Isabel Borrego.
Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to beaches and marinas in 46 countries throughout the world.
The programme is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education and the accolade could bring a boost to Spain’s flagging economy.
