Ryanair has opened its second Belgian base at Brussels Zaventem with four aircraft set to offer ten new routes, delivering up to 1.5 million passengers per year. The low cost carrier revealed the move will result in sustaining 1,500 “on-site” jobs at Brussels Zaventem Airport with 200 weekly flights.
The decision to start flying out of Brussels – described by O’Leary as “a logical development” – is nonetheless a major change in Ryanair’s strategy of concentrating on secondary regional airports like Charleroi, benefitting from sizeable government subsidies to keep prices as low as possible.
Ryanair chief marketing officer, Kenny Jacobs said: “Ryanair is delighted to open its new base at Brussels Zaventem, offering ten exciting routes to Alicante, Barcelona, Ibiza, Lisbon, Malaga, Palma, Porto, Rome, Valencia and Venice, which will deliver over 1.5m passengers and sustain over 1,500 “on-site” jobs at Brussels Zaventem Airport.
Our ten new Zaventem routes with multiple daily frequencies are ideal for business passengers or families booking their summer holidays and customers can also enjoy Ryanair’s recent customer service enhancements including a second free carry-on bag, allocated seating and the use of portable electronic devices throughout their flight, with further improvements set to be rolled out over the coming months, as Ryanair continues to deliver so much more than just low fares,” added Jacobs.
