With the possibility that the UK will witness its coldest May in more than a century, rising temperatures in the Mediterranean could prompt Brits to book breaks overseas.

Skyscanner.net has advised people to “take advantage of early-season prices and book a cheap flight to the sun” in order to escape the cold in the UK.

One of the destinations recommended by the website as particularly warm and sunny at present is Malaga on the Costa del Sol, with temperatures around 25 degrees C and many flights to the destination from the UK.

“Southern Spain is a good early-season bet for guaranteed warmth and sunshine,” Skyscanner stated, advising using Malaga as a base to explore the coast and Andalucia or to relax and enjoy leisurely lunches.

The Met Office has reported that April 2012 was the wettest on UK record, based on information dating back to 1910.
