Paolozzi Comes to Cútar

A collection of 50 original prints by one of the great pioneers of the Pop Art movement will be showcased at Galería Cutarte in their latest exhibition which opens on September 22nd.

Eduardo Paolozzi, who died in 2005 was a major figure in the international art world in the second half of the 20th century. Best known as a sculptor, he was also a highly original printmaker. Some of his collage-based silkscreened images are among the finest examples of British Pop Art – a movement he was instrumental in shaping. “General Dynamic F.U.N” is a series of fifty screenprints and photolithographs created between 1965 and 1970.

The prints are explosive juxtapositions of familiar images of the time – magazine advertisements, domestic objects, high fashion and Hollywood idols – which are still just as relevant today. In the words of the artist’s friend , writer J.G. Ballard “The familiar materials of our everyday lives, the jostling iconographies of mass advertising and consumer goods, are manipulated to reveal their true identities. For those who can read its pages, “General Dynamic F.U.N.” is a unique guidebook to the electric garden of our minds”

Cutarte is a community art gallery opened earlier this year in the village of Cútar, north-west of Vélez-Málaga – set up and managed by four local artists with the support of the local ayuntamiento. Examples of their own work can also be seen at the gallery.

“We are delighted to be able to host such an important exhibition” they said “we hope as many people as possible will take the opportunity to come and see it”

The opening event of “General Dynamic F.U.N.” will be held at the Gallery on September 22nd between 7.30 and 10pm. It will then be open every Saturday up to and including 3rd November from 11.00 – 14.00 and from 18.00-21.00. Also for Cútar´s Monfi Fiesta 6th and 7th October18.00-21.00.
