New Spanish route from Brittany Ferries

Holiday makers heading to Spain this Summer can enjoy a comfortable and convenient start to their trip, with the addition of a new route to Bilbao from Portsmouth International Port.

The Brittany Ferries service started on March 27th and offers a direct link from Britain’s best connected cruise and ferry Port to Northern Spain. With refurbished high quality accommodation onboard, ‘Cap Finistère’ completes the journey in around 24 hours offering a stress-free start to a holiday.

Mike Bevens, Brittany Ferries Group Passenger Commercial Director comments: “Bilbao has forged a reputation as a destination in its own right in recent years, not least due to the iconic Guggenheim Museum and Norman Foster-designed metro system. As the numbers of air travellers from the UK to Spain have declined, we’ve witnessed a surge in demand for direct UK Spain crossings. Our customers welcome being able to relax on a comfortable and spacious cruise-ferry and the freedom that having their own car brings.”

The route operates twice a week, and complements an existing Brittany Ferries service to Santander. This is the company’s first new port destination in 25 years and it means that passengers will now have the choice of four crossings a week to Northern Spain from Portsmouth International Port. Martin Putman, Port Manager, said: “We are delighted that there is now even more choice for passengers heading to Spain this year. We know that people love the convenience of starting their journey in Portsmouth. The new Brittany Ferries route combined with the Port’s brand new terminal and passenger facilities should ensure a great start to any holiday.”

Motorists can pack what they want into their car without the fear of excess baggage charges. There’s no additional costs for fuel supplements and checking in.  When airports and airlines are paralysed by strikes and by adverse weather, the ferry service keeps on running. Passengers on the first crossing of the year to Bilbao will be amongst the last to use Portsmouth’s old terminal building.

From April 1st the brand new terminal will open its doors, ushering in a new era of quality and comfort at the Port. A stylish and spacious design is complemented by top-class facilities. The terminal will also be one of the most environmentally friendly public buildings in the country when it is officially opened in May.
