Mallorca Receives Another Michelin star

Great news for lovers of fine food and drink, there are already five restaurants in Mallorca that hold the coveted Michelin star award for food excellence, with one more just added in the past month.

The new edition of the Michelin Guide 2012 in Spain andPortugal has been released, with the Es Fum restaurant in Mallorca receiving its first Michelin star. The Restaurant in Costa d’en Blanes is lead by head chef Thomas Kahl and is expected to become even more popular throughout the island and will now be a top restaurant to dine out at.

None of the other restaurants with the Michelin star award lost any rankings, which is great news for the island’s food and drink industry.

Here are Mallorca’s Michelin star restaurants; there are five restaurants with an impressive six stars between them.

Es Molí den Bou – Sa Coma, Mallorca

Es Molí d’en Bou opened its doors in 2000 under Chef Tomeu Caldentey from Mallorca. During the last few years, he has maintained the same philosophy: to offer and serve a creative and simple cuisine based always on the traditional Mallorcan kitchen, while adding a very personal and modern spin to every dish. In 2004, the restaurant received a Michelin Star, and in May 2009 moved venue to the 4 star Hotel Protur Sa Coma Playa. There is a Chef’s Table (located in the kitchen) with a maximum capacity for eight people.

Opening hours are lunch 1.30 to 3.15pm, dinner 7.30 to 10.15pm

Plat d’Or – Son Vida, Mallorca

Located at the Sheraton Mallorca – the 5 star Arabella Golf Hotel in Son Vida, Plat d’Or restaurant offers Mediterranean cuisine with Mallorcan influences created by Rafa Sánchez. This restaurant was awarded a Michelin star for seven consecutive years and its chef is one of the finest in Mallorca. The restaurant has been recently re-decorated and the kitchen offers elaborate cuisine based on local Balearic produce, there are lovely views over the golf course from the terrace. The hotel has an ongoing agreement with local co-operatives and producers so that it can always feature the best local ingredients in its culinary creations.

Opening hours are from 7.30 to 10.30pm. Cosed on Sunday and Monday. The restaurant has a maximum capacity of 80 people

Tristan – Porals Nous, Mallorca

This is without doubt the favorite fine dining restaurant on Mallorca for the international jet set. Established over 24 years ago, it is the only two-star Michelin restaurant on the island. Overlooking the prestigious Puerto Portals harbour, it is the place to be seen. The award-winning chef, Gerhard Schwaiger, is a pioneer in top-class gastronomy. Enjoy the experimental tastes and culinary combinations of the “Tasting Tapas Menu”.

In the picturesque little town of Deià, at the foot of the Teix Mountain, you will find a very special place to dine. Es Racó d’es Teix is a Michelin star restaurant, offering stunning panoramic views while you savour the delectable dishes created by chef Josef Sauerschell. Here, the cuisine is based on clean and distinctive flavours, where the focus is on the classical, but modernised Mediterranean kitchen.

Opening hours are lunch 1 – 3pm, dinner 8 – 11pm during the summer. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Marc Fosh of “Read´s Hotel” in Santa Maria is a celebrity chef. The likeable Briton is often consulted by local journalists on topics like modern cuisine and Mediterranean light food. He was awarded a Michelin star in 2002. There are 2 restaurants to choose from at Read’s; the smarter Bacchus, offers a fine dining experience, with its acclaimed gourmet a la carte menu, impressive 12 metre arches and fresco decorated walls. The other restaurant is the more relaxed Bistro33, situated in the 18th century olive pressing room still with all its original equipment providing a totally unique and magic setting. The menu of bistro style dishes is supplemented by daily suggestions from the blackboard.

Opening hours for Bacchus are dinner only 7.30 – 10.30pm Tuesday – Saturday Bistro33 for lunch 1 – 3.30pm and dinner 7.30 – 10.30pm, open every day.
