Christmas lights in the Costa del Sol
While sunshine is (literally) synonymous with the Costa del Sol, spending time in the region from late November to early January delivers a very different kind of magic. Towns along the coast glitter and sparkle with stunning displays of Christmas lights, with Malaga in particularly known for its dazzling delights. With cooler weather and longer evenings, winter is the perfect time to enjoy the Costa del Sol’s Christmas atmosphere, with light switch-on events taking place from mid to late November each year.
Also not to be missed is the Three Kings’ Day – Dia De Los Reyes – which is the main event in the Spanish Christmas calendar, taking place on 6th January. The evening before, restaurants in towns such as Marbella offer a celebratory dinner with plenty of convivial spirit. The streets also come to life as effigies of the Three Kings parade through the town, with sweets thrown into the crowd as they pass. If you’ve never experienced Christmas in Spain, make sure this is on your calendar for next year!
Raising sails in Mallorca
Mallorca in September is all about life on the ocean wave, with a string of regattas and other events making this the perfect time to enjoy watching the boats sail by (ideally while sipping a cocktail on the balcony of your own property in Mallorca). Events range from the glamourous Oyster Palma Regatta to the fascinating Lateen-Sail Festival, where you can see traditional Mallorcan lateen-rigged boats and enjoy a variety of cultural activities.
September is also an ideal time to dine al fresco, with the weather still plenty warm enough for long, lingering meals outdoors, minus the intensity of the mid-summer sun. Taking place between June and October in Moraira, Benissa, Xàbia, Villajoyosa, Dénia, Guardamar, Orihuela, Almoradí, Altea, Benidorm and Calp, the events fill the streets with music, processions, performances and stunning costumes, all deeply rooted in local identities and traditions.
On festival days, the lively atmosphere is infectious, with crowds lining the streets and beaches in their thousands to be part of the events. Each local festival has its own feel, so be sure to experience the unique vibes in the different locations.
