An unprecedented 60.4 million foreign tourists came to Spain last year, spending an estimated 45.1 billion euros (US$61 billion), according to industry association Exceltur.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/taylorwimpeyspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/kidsbeachYA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6065 aligncenter\" title=\"Record numbers of foreign tourists poured into Spain in 2013 to bake on sunny beaches but a new challenge lies ahead: luring them to holiday spots inland.\" src=\"http:\/\/taylorwimpeyspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/kidsbeachYA.jpg\" alt=\"Record numbers of foreign tourists poured into Spain in 2013 to bake on sunny beaches but a new challenge lies ahead: luring them to holiday spots inland.\" width=\"540\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/taylorwimpeyspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/kidsbeachYA.jpg 540w, https:\/\/taylorwimpeyspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/kidsbeachYA-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/taylorwimpeyspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/kidsbeachYA-180x100.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The visitors came mostly from Britain, Germany and France, with a jump in Russian tourist numbers, too, it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really good year which gives us a lot of hope after some difficult years,\u201d Exceltur president Amancio Lopez told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, tourism is pivotal to the Spanish economy, which emerged in the third quarter last year from a two-year recession, still dragged down by a 26% unemployment rate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think tourism should be an engine to help improve the Spanish economy, as it always has been,\u201d Lopez said.<\/p>\n<p>But Spain believes it can better exploit its attractions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, the most sought-after destinations are for sun and beach holidays whereas urban tourism has suffered a bit,\u201d Lopez said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Spain has a richness not only for sun and beach holidays but also for cultural, gastronomic and lifestyle holidays,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Though industry estimates have yet to be confirmed by government numbers due Tuesday, Spain clearly enjoyed a boom in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really good year,\u201d said Jose Luis Mendez, treasurer of the Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies, CEAV, which estimated foreign tourism numbers in 2013 at \u201cclose to 60 million\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Tourism, like the automobile industry, accounts for about 10% of Spanish economic output and last year\u2019s performance should place Spain as the world\u2019s number three destination.<\/p>\n<p>Like his colleagues, Mendez said Spain had been typecast as a sunny beach market, overshadowing a wealth of cultural, gastronomic and rural destinations.<\/p>\n<p>Britons and Germans tended to prefer the Canary Islands off Africa, French tourists were drawn to Catalonia, and Russians liked both Catalonia and the Balearic islands such as Majorca, Mendez said.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Spain\u2019s own attractions, however, one of the keys to its success in 2013 was misfortune in Egypt, where months of violent clashes and demonstrations turned visitors away.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt lost 2.5 million tourists from June, said Exceltur vice president Jose Luis Zoreda. \u201cCuriously, Spain\u2019s tourists grew by 3 million,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>But tourists hardly stepped foot in Spain\u2019s interior, where destinations were already suffering from a decline in domestic Spanish tourist numbers because of the economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results were not good in the cities, except for Barcelona,\u201d Zoreda said, with Madrid doing worst and all inland tourism down except for the wine-growing Rioja region.<\/p>\n<p>The Rioja region in Spain\u2019s north specialised in wine tourism, providing a good example for other parts of the country, the tourism official said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpain must grow with a distinctive element of its own,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, \u201ca large proportion of the demand we got from Egypt has been budget tourism,\u201d Zoreda admitted, urging Spain to develop a higher-quality, more diverse offer.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of Spanish tourism businesses \u2014 54.8% \u2014 reported lower profits last year, according to Exceltur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation clearly benefited sun and beach tourism. Nevertheless we are facing difficult situations in other areas that rely on domestic tourism and have not been able to benefit from foreign tourism,\u201d agreed Juan Molas, president of the hotels confederation CEHAT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou must not forget that 70% to 80% of our visitors choose beach destinations,\u201d Molas said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the great challenge for Spanish tourism: to sell and spread the word about all the tourism products in the rest of Spain.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Record numbers of foreign tourists poured into Spain in 2013 to bake on sunny beaches but a new challenge lies ahead: luring them to holiday spots inland.
