Public art galleries and museums in Mallorca enjoyed an increase in visitors in 2010, despite budgets being cut back by 15%. The number of visitors rose to 735,611, a rise of 4.6% over visitors in 2009. It is thought that a greater involvement in social networking sites and improved websites have contributed to the growth in visitor numbers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

Palma’s jewel, the\u00a0Es Baluard contemporary art gallery saw an increase in numbers of 16.3%, and the gallery’s director Cristina Ros points to the greater number of activities and events at the gallery that has made people realise the gallery offers much more that simply exhibition space.<\/p>\n

\n

The Solleric Casal, the Diocese Museum and the Centre de Cultura Sa Nostra in Palma all saw increased visitor numbers, whilst numbers fell for the Juan March Foundation, probably because of the reduced exhibition programme during 2010.<\/p>\n

All the museums seemed to have benefited from an increase in group bookings, particularly from schools. The\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3n Yannick & Ben Jakober has seen a massive 21% increase in visitors, which they say is solely due to the launch of an activities programme aimed at schools.<\/p>\n

\n

Es Baluard Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art \u00a0was opened in 2004 as a cultural institution for research and dissemination of Balearic & Mediterranean art from the 20th and 21st centuries. The museum is housed in a former military fortress – the Baluard de Sant Pere – which dates back to the 16th century, and was part of the Renaissance wall that surrounded the city of Palma.<\/p>\n

The collection of the Foundation Es Baluard consists of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and drawings by artists emerging from the late 19th century: C\u00e9zanne, Gauguin, Picasso, Miro, Picabia, Magritte, Giacometti , Motherwell, T\u00e0pies, to more recent artists such as Horn, Plessi, Polke, Kiefer, Schnabel, Barcel\u00f3, and Scully. \u00a0There are also outstanding examples of Catalan and Mediterranean landscapes, and artists who directly or indirectly have been associated with the Balearics: S. Rusi\u00f1ol, J. Mir, A. Gelabert, H. Anglada-Camarasa, J. Or MH Momp\u00f3 Ramis, among others.<\/p>\n

\n

Es Baluard was developed by the government and has an annual budget provided in equal shares by the Mallorcan counsel (Consell), the Balearic government (Govern) and Palma\u00b4s town hall (Cort). The public museum is however managed by a private foundation, chaired by Pedro Serra, who has also personally donated many of the gallery’s art pieces.<\/p>\n

The museum covers a total surface of 5,027 square metres, with 2,500 sq.m of exhibition space. The museum features one of the largest cisterns from the 17th century, known as ‘The Aljub’. \u00a0This fresh water reservoir was used to supply the Sant Pere quarter,as well as ships that used to dock in the harbour. It is now used as a setting for installations of contemporary artists, and for shows and concerts.<\/p>\n

The exhibition space extends on to large terraces and external spaces, from where you can enjoy wonderful views of the Bay of Palma. There is a \u00a0book and gift shop, and a highly regarded restaurant on one of the terraces. There are no foreign language texts in the museum (only Spanish & Catalan) or audio guides, as the collections are refreshed every 3 months or so, and it is not practical to provide them.<\/p>\n

THE NEW BUILDING<\/h1>\n

The new building is part of the old Renaissance bastion. The 21st Century and the 16th Century buildings coexist harmonically.<\/strong>The museum building is defined by simple, clean lines and shows great respect for the historical heritage that surrounds it, fitting in perfectly with the profile of the Renaissance bastion. The dialogue between the contemporary architecture of the new building and the ancient walls is present and constant, and you are aware of it as you walk through the different areas of the museum. The aim of the designers was to integrate a modern building into the historical heritage of the walls, but at the same time clearly differentiating it. For this reason it has been built with materials such as concrete and glass, making it easy to distinguish between the two types of construction.<\/p>\n

The building was designed by Llu\u00eds Garc\u00eda-Ruiz, Jaume Garc\u00eda-Ruiz, Vicente Tom\u00e1s and Angel S\u00e1nchez Cantalejo and covers a total area of 5,027 square metres, of which 2,500 are devoted to exhibition space. It is divided into three floors that relate to the exterior and the ancient walls and are interconnected by ramps, skylights and large interior balconies, with the idea of creating an interior street.<\/p>\n

The exterior areas are conceived as exhibition spaces and places to walk and follow the perimeter of the walls. The 17th century reservoir is also an exhibition area and is used for different events in the museum\u2019s programme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
