UK news, books and convenience retailer WHSmith has opened to two airside stores at Alicante airport after securing a five-year contract to operate at Spain’s sixth busiest airport, its first venture in the country in travel-retail.
The stores will offer a broad range of products to passengers on the move, with a selection of Spanish and International newspapers, magazines and books as well as confectionery, drinks, grab & go sandwiches and travel essentials.
Both stores provide a premium, design-focused contemporary look and feel, in keeping with Alicante International airport’s design aspirations for its airside lounge. This includes an increase in the footprint of the main airside store to enable WHSmith to offer an improved and extended range of sandwiches, soft drinks, souvenirs and reading materials in multiple languages to reflect the airport’s passenger profile.
WHSmith International director Louis de Bourgoing said: “Securing the contract for the stores in Alicante is a significant step in our European development strategy. It follows the win of the Dusseldorf International airport contract and further openings in northern Europe. The team has worked hard to deliver a high standard of design for these stores and provide a real step-change to the traditional ‘news and books’ operations. We look forward to working with AENA to deliver a compelling offer to Alicante airport’s passengers.”
