TOURISM on the Costa del Sol is set to be boosted with 22 new airline routes to Malaga. Seven of them are to Germany, specifically to Dortmund, Cologne, Nuremberg, Hannover, Munich, Munster and Hamburg.
And that has particularly pleased tourism chiefs as German tourists spend 12.4 days on average on holiday on the Costa del Sol, which is three more than other nationalities.
On top of that they spend an average of €67.22 a day, which is seven euros more than others.
Last year, 959,217 German tourists passed through Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport, and there are an average of 33 flights per week in the summer.
However, following meetings at the Berlin Tourism Fair, the tourism sector and the Junta de Andalucia believe there are not enough direct flights to and from Germany. They believe the number of flights to Germany should be doubled.
There will also be flights to Oslo and Bergen in Norway; Copenhagen (Denmark), Brussels (Belgium), Paris (France), Warsaw (Poland), Knock (Ireland) and to Belfast, Gatwick and Cardiff.
Within Spain, there will be two new flights connecting to Madrid-Barajas and another two to the North African enclave of Melilla.
Over Easter, 1,514 flights were operated to or from Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport. Eighty per cent of the flights connecting with Malaga’s airport are international, mainly in Europe.
