After the phenomenal success of Tapas España by José Pizarro (2013) and Iberica London (2014), this summer’s Hay Festival edition will include a new Spanish themed tapas pop-up nestled amongst the books and crowds – hosted by HISPANIA London, and created by the Spanish Tourist Office.
The ten-day pop up will serve up a tasty menu of tapas showcasing the flavours of Spain and developed by HISPANIA, focusing on classic spanish dishes with a contemporary twist.
Dishes have been created to bring a true taste of Spain to the Welsh borders. The menu will include patatas bravas, tortilla, pimientos de padron, paella, a selection of Spanish cheeses, cured meats, jamón, refreshing gazpacho, the famous Hispania fabada asturiana “Casa Gerardo” and the “Hay Festival Hispania veggie croquets”, specially created by HISPANIA head chef Iván Ortiz for the festival and made of local ingredients. Not to be missed the typical Spanish chocolate con churros!
To accompany their tapas, guests can sip a variety of favourite Spanish wines reining from different Spanish DO (Rueda, Albariño, Mentrida and Rioja) choosen to to satisfy the most exquisite paladar.
Spain has long been known for its excellent cuisine ranging from its culinary star produce, such as jamón and olive oil, to the pintxos of San Sebastián, the paella of Valencia or the suckling pig of Segovia. The basis of Spanish traditional cuisine is good quality ingredients and simple home cooking, both of which are key elements of HISPANIA Hay Festival menu.
Enrique Ruiz de Lera, director of the Spanish Tourist office in the UK, says “Building on the success of Tapas España in 2013 and 2014, we are delighted to be returning to the Hay Festival for the 2015 edition with Spanish restaurant group HISPANIA. Last two years, the pop-up was one of the unexpected star features at Hay so the bar has been set very high for 2015.”
This year’s pop up has been designed by London-based company Binom Arquitects. The unique design is fully recyclable and designed in modular elements featuring aromatic herbs hunging from the walls and used throughout the festival in the cooking.
Hispania, directed by Marcos Morán (of Casa Marcial, Asturias, awarded one Michelin star), is located at 72-74 Lombard Street (Bank), one of the most emblematic streets of London and is the biggest project devoted to Spanish gastronomy in Europe.
