The Museo Picasso Malaga presents The European Modern Poster an exhibition on view 18th June, 2012 – 16th September, 2012.
On show for the first time in Malaga, this exhibition is devoted to the early glory years of the poster. It is organized in three sections, each of which corresponds to a significant period. The first section covers the early aesthetic look of the poster, with works by Jules Chéret, Ramón Casas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec that once adorned Paris and Barcelona, two cities with which Picasso was well acquainted. The second section deals with the period between the two world wars, which is considered the golden age of the poster in Europe. It features relevant artists such as Cassandre, Paul Colin, Jean Carlu, Herbert Bayer and Otto Baumberger, amongst others. A third section focuses on Avant-garde works, with posters by artists who were members of Modern movements (many of which had developed their own way of doing things on the basis of Picasso’s Cubism), such as Constructivism, Futurism and Surrealism, or the creative proposals of the German Bauhaus. This section includes posters by Vladimir Lebedev, Alexandre Rodchenko, Man Ray, Robert Béreny and Fortunato Depero.
The works on display, by more than 90 artists, provide and exhaustive overview of the enormous technical progress of reproducibility which, thanks to innovative new printing techniques, led to the transformation of the whole idea of advertising. The posters that have been selected for this exhibition belong to some of the most renowned collections in the world. – www.museopicassomalaga.org
