Norwegian starts Turku-Alicante flights

Flights from Turku to Alicante start this week, operated by Norwegian airlines. The connection is operating as a trial, initially until August 2014.

Turku airport lost a number of connections when Ryanair announced it would leave the south-western city. Now it plans a comeback with Norwegian, which will fly to Alicante and back once a week over the winter. Additional services will run during the summer holiday season.

“When we look at the flights during the coming winter season, then we can make some decisions,” said Norwegian’s communications manager Jukka Aarnio. “Passenger volumes will decide. If there is enough demand, the flights will continue.”

The firm will not publish customer numbers on the new flights, but says it is satisfied with advance bookings. On average, Norwegian flights to and from Finland operate at 80 percent capacity.

In addition to the Norwegian service, Turku airport now has flights operated by Wizz Air and Air Baltic, among others. Last year Ryanair left the airport, blaming high fees for its decision.
