The Picasso Museum in Malaga is devoting this exhibition to the figure of Martin Kippenberger, a member of the generation of German creators who explored the role of the artist in culture.
Kippenberger lived in Spain at the end of the 80s and it was in the town of Carmona in Seville where he became fascinated by Pablo Picasso. This led him to paint the series Untitled (1988), from which this exhibition includes a selection of works.
The exhibition is entitled Kippenberger Meets Picasso and will be showing approximately 50 works, including large paintings, drawings and sculptures, as well as a selection of over 60 artist’s books, catalogues and posters.
About Martin Kippenberger:
Born in 1953 in Dortmund, Martin Kippenberger was one of the most versatile and innovative post-war German artists. He was also widely regarded as one of the most talented German artists of his generation and his artistic reputation and influence has soared since his untimely death in 1997.
During the last 10 years of his life he created a series of drawings on hotel stationery, which are commonly referred to as the ‘hotel drawings’. These drawings were made on 100´s of pieces of hotel stationery and in a way tells the story of his travels as he often lived in hotels for weeks and sometimes months at a time.
The exhibition at the Museo Picasso Málaga is dedicated to Martin Kippenberger´s work in Spain, where he lived in the late 1980s and became fascinated by the life and work of Pablo Picasso. This profound passion led him to paint the series Untitled (1988), from which a selection of works will be included in the show at the Picasso Museum.
