Britons who head to Spain’s Balearic islands will be quids in this summer thanks to falling resort prices and the powerful pound, say researchers.

Families planning to go self catering to cut their holiday bills will find that food and drinks cost 56 per cent less at a supermarket in Mallorca than a year ago.

In Menorca, the same items are 25 per cent cheaper than last summer, according to Post Office Travel Money, which tracked resort prices over the past year and compared them with other top tourist destinations.

Researchers found a typical bar bill for 10 popular drinks at Ibiza Town’s nightclubs was almost 23 per cent cheaper than prices in Barcelona.

The findings coincide with a Post Office survey which showed 88 per cent of parents said Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza were good value when they lasted visited the islands.

Only 52 per cent rated France good value and 60 per cent gave the thumbs up to Italy.

Even Turkey, long rated a budget bargain for UK holidaymakers , only scored a 67 per cent good value rating.

The Post Office’s Andrew Brown said: “The Balearic Islands – and particularly Mallorca – are looking incredible value this year.

“Not only is sterling having a positive impact on prices but our latest holiday cost barometer reveals that restaurants, bars and shops are all cutting costs in the face of fierce competition for business.

“That spells good news for UK holidaymakers – whatever type of holiday they plan to take.”

Holidaymakers in Mallorca will pay an average £42 for a meal and drinks, down from over £56 last summer.

Ice cream, beach gear and water rides in the same resort are 14 per cent less than a year ago, with a kid’s lido costing £3.20 – 30 per cent less than a year ago.

Couples visiting the capital Palma will also find prices in the city lower than anywhere else in western Europe.

Meals, drinks and sight-seeing are around a third cheaper than other traditional favourites like Barcelona and Paris.
