ALICANTE was in the third spot for flight searches from the UK for summer 2012 on the search engine Skyscanner.
Top spot was taken by Malaga, up one spot from last year and toppling 2011 winner New York which plummeted into ninth spot.
Faro (Portugal) was in second place.
Spanish cities were in six of the top 10 summer 2012 destinations.
Palma de Mallorca took fourth spot, Tenerife in the Canary Islands came fifth, Ibiza sixth and Barcelona seventh.
Bangkok in Thailand came eighth and Dublin in Ireland 10th. Meanwhile, in March, Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga were the most searched for cities in Spain and ranked second, eighth and ninths respectively in the world out of 100 countries.
In the remaining top 10 spots on a world level were London, Paris, Bangkok, Rome, New York, Milan and Amsterdam.
Murcia City ranked 12 on a national level and 65 on a world level.
In the past three years, Spain has topped Skyscanner’s search tables. Last year Malaga maintained its position as the most searched for city from the UK.
Alicante came second followed by Tenerife. New York was a newcomer in fourth spot, pushing Palma de Mallorca down to fifth spot.
London followed in sixth place, with Faro (Portugal), Bangkok (Thailand), Dalaman (Turkey) and Barcelona in the remaining top 10 positions.
Spain topped the list as the most searched for country from Germany, Sweden and Spain.
It came second on the most searched for country from France, Italy, Norway and Russia, third from the Netherlands, and sixth from Russia.
