The Mediterranean coast of Spain could well be called the “Costa del Golf”, without any exaggeration. Why? If you are thinking about golf, then Spain’s Mediterranean coast will be a real discovery. Firstly on account of the broad array of courses on offer. All along the coast there are challenges and fun for all, whether you are a beginner or an expert. There are courses that host major tournaments and many have also been designed by famous golf stars. The wonderful Mediterranean climate means you can play almost any day of the year – another advantage. Add to this the host of additional leisure options available: theme parks, monuments, spa resorts, gastronomy, countryside, shopping… and, of course, beaches. Your travelling companions will be thrilled.
The list could continue, with the area’s great communications, excellent hotel infrastructure and the variety of settings, but you are sure to want to know exactly what awaits you.
The Balearic Islands
The archipelago has more than 20 golf courses between Majorca, Minorca and Ibiza. The majority of them are in Majorca. However, there is no problem getting from one island to another – there are scheduled sea and air services between them. Here, not only will you enjoy the golf, but also the countryside: for example, the Sierra de Tramuntana Mountains, the Cabrera National Park and Minorca, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Do you prefer art? Then you will be more than satisfied with the cultural programme and museums to be found in Palma de Mallorca, with the historic centre of Eivissa, which has the World Heritage designation, and with the important megalithic monuments to be found around the archipelago. If you want to discover the most beautiful places in the Balearic Islands, then the best thing is a boat trip: they will organise every last detail for you at any of the five marine resorts.
Region of Valencia
Here you will find almost thirty golf clubs in the different provinces of the Region: Castellón, Valencia and Alicante. You can play your favourite sport while you enjoy all the flavour of the Mediterranean in renowned tourist destinations such as Altea, Benidorm, Dénia, Orihuela, Jávea, Gandía, Elche and Borriol, a town which hosts a PGA European Tour event each year. If you are travelling as a family, then you are in luck because there are so many options for children: from the Arts and Sciences Centre, through to the Terra Mítica Theme Park and the new Bioparc Zoo. Not to be missed either are the cultural routes in the city of Valencia and the wonderful Elche Palm Grove, which features on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Andalusia
In the south, furthermore, there is the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia. In the provinces of Almería and Granada you will find courses practically right on the beach, such as those in Mojácar, Roquetas de Mar and Motril. Nevertheless, the top golfing area is Malaga province, the real “Costa del Golf”, with more than 40 courses at your disposal. Here there are famous names such as Marbella and Estepona; you will also find several clubs in towns like Mijas, Benalmádena and Casares. Special mention should be made of the San Roque area, on the Mediterranean coast of Cadiz province, where there are highly prestigious courses such as Real Club de Sotogrande and Valderrama, setting for the Ryder Cup.
